Essays for impressed revenue stamps and cancels
No impressed revenue stamps of Perak are recorded as issued stamps but a hand-painted essay inscribed Treasury Teluk Anson One Hundred Rupees (sic) is known as illustrated here.  Also shown are three similar Treasury cancel essays without face value.

All four essays are based on a tiger's head design, drawn in vermilion and white on brown laid paper.  The cancel essays are dated 24 March 1896 and the 100 rupees essay is dated 31 March 1896.

Judicial
Note: all Perak judicial issues from J1 to J89 were produced by locally overprinting Straits Settlements judicials (portrait of Queen Victoria) with the state name PERAK in capitals.

  J49. $25 brown and green
  J50. $50 brown and green
  J51. $100 brown and green

Notes:
1. A bisected example of J42 is known tied to a court document by a 12 July 1889 cancel.  The cancel seems genuine but the rate does not match the costs itemised on the document and I regard its status as uncertain.
2. Recorded usage: J42 - Nov 1891 to Sep 1892, J42a - Jul 1889, J46 - Jan 1892, J49 - May 1897, J50 - Apr 1897 to Sep 1898, J51 - 1897.

  J89. $25 red and black

Note: a $3 red and black similarly overprinted was recorded in November 1913 in the Bulletin of the Fiscal Philatelic Society and subsequently listed by Forbin and Barefoot, but I have not seen this.

Recorded usage: J81 - Jan 1897, J82 - Jun 1895, J83 - Jan 1897, J84 - Apr 1895, J85 - 1897, J87 - Jul 1897, J88 - May 1895 to May 1897, J89 - Sep to Nov 1897.

Picture
J111 and J121
b) Overprinted Judicial. with stop, 15 x 3 mm (1901)
J111. 3c dull purple and carmine

c) Overprinted JUDICIAL in seriffed capitals, 17 x 2½ mm (1901)
  J121. $3 green and ochre

Notes:
1. J101 and J104 are known imperforate as overprint essays produced by De La Rue.  A similar pair of unadopted essays exists with the overprints in narrower font.
2. J108 was not issued without the Judicial overprint.
3. Forbin erroneously lists J101/109 as being overprinted in red.
4. Barefoot lists the 50c dull purple and slate-black overprinted as J101/9 but I believe this is an error.  A complete set of J101/9 is included in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Collection in the British Library and the only 50c in the set is green and black.
5. J111 is known used only in Selangor.
6. Recorded usage: J101 - Jun 1897 to Feb 1902, J102 - Aug 1898 to Oct 1899, J103 - May 1897 to Mar 1902, J104 - Jul 1897 to Jun 1899, J105 - Jan 1898 to Feb 1902, J106 - Nov 1897 to Dec 1899, J107 - May 1897 to Jul 1899, J108 - Jun to Jul 1897, J109 - Jul 1897, J111 - Mar to Oct 1901, J121 - Sep 1901.

J101 and J104 overprint essays (see note 1 above)
Note: J21/28 of Federated Malay States are probably an issue for Perak, but are included with FMS since the name Perak does not appear in the territory inscription.

  R8. $5 green and purple

Notes:
1. R1 is recorded with inverted watermark.
2. Both Morley and Forbin record the 10c magenta with the same overprint, though I have not seen this and it could be an error for the 10c purple and purple.
3. Recorded usage: R1 - Mar 1891, R2 - Feb 1890, R3 - Apr 1890 to Jun 1895, R4 - Apr 1890 to 1894, R5 - Sep 1891 to Feb 1892, R6 - Oct 1892 to Oct 1895, R7 - Jun 1890 to Jun 1898, R8 - Oct 1898 to Dec 1890.

2. Recorded usage: R21 - Aug 1891 to Dec 1893, R22 - Aug 1892 to Jan 1894, R23 - Apr to Sep 1892, R25 - Apr 1892 to May 1894, R26 - Nov 1895 to Jun 1896, R27 - Oct 1892 to Nov 1898, R29 - Dec 1892.

1. This stamp was issued during a shortage of 3c stamps prior to the issue of the new FMS postage and revenue stamps.  Postal use was widespread though probably philatelic and possibly unauthorised.
